5 Fun Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

The largest secular holiday in the world, Earth Day is meant to be celebrated by everyone who calls this planet home. Best of all, it couldn’t be easier to get in on the celebrations.

Earth Day is a major global event recognized by over 200 countries that takes place every year on April 22nd. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, and the holiday has only continued to grow in popularity and importance with the growth and mainstreaming of the environmental movement. This Earth Day, make a small effort to demonstrate your commitment to preserving and nurturing the environment with one (or more) of these five fun activities.

1) Hop on your bike

Perhaps this Earth Day you can ditch your car in favour of your bicycle if you need to run any errands. It might take a little longer, but you’ll be able to enjoy the fresh air, get a bit of exercise, and cut down on the amount of CO2 you would have produced with your car. If it’s a nice day, then consider getting your whole family on bikes and cycling to a nearby park.

2) Cook a locally sourced meal

One of the places you can cycle to this Earth Day is to a nearby farmer’s market to pick up some locally produced food for cooking up an Earth Day meal. Of course, it may not be possible to source all of your ingredients locally, especially if you live in certain parts of Canada, but try to make at least one locally sourced ingredient the star of your dish.

3) Start an herb garden

Earth Day is a fantastic day to start a small herb garden, either outside in your yard or simply on your windowsill. You can grow plenty of different herbs to brighten up your meals and add some extra green to your life. Some of the easiest and most versatile herbs to grow include thyme, basil, rosemary, oregano, parsley, and peppermint.

4) Hang a bird feeder

Hanging a bird feeder is a great way to attract the local birds to your yard, making for some great bird-watching opportunities. Better yet, why not make a fun activity out of building your very own birdhouse with the kids? Have fun, try to use materials that you already have lying around, and don’t worry about making it perfect.

5) Take a hike!

Depending on the weather, Earth Day can be a lovely time to get out for a hike on some nearby trails or to simply take a stroll through a local park. You’re likely to meet others out on the trail who are also celebrating Earth Day by immersing themselves in nature. Bring along a picnic lunch and spend some time with your friends and family under the sun.

Earth Day may be a global event, but there is a lot you can do on the individual or family level to have your own, meaningful celebration. All you really have to do is make sure that, at some point, you take a step back and appreciate the Earth.
