Meet the Contenders for Canada Reads 2020

This year’s edition of Canada Reads will be taking place from Monday, March 16th to Thursday, March 19th, and it will be hosted by Ali Hassan of CBC Radio’s Laugh Out Loud. During the competition, five high-profile Canadians make a case for why their chosen book deserves to win. One of the books is eliminated each day.

Canada Reads is organized and broadcast by the CBC. The English-language version of the competition has aired every year since its inception in 2002. Tune in to the debates to see which of the following five books serves as the best lens through which Canadians should see themselves and their country in 2020.

Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club by Megan Gail Coles

A debut novel by Megan Gail Coles, Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club takes place on a snowy February day in a trendy St. John’s restaurant. It tells the story of several characters trying to survive the province’s harsh economic times. The book will be defended by Alayna Fender, a YouTube content creator who covers topics like wellness and sexuality. She also teaches workshops on compassion at schools and conventions.

Radicalized by Cory Doctorow

Radicalized is made up of four different stories by activist and author Cory Doctorow. The book deals with the topics of immigration, justice system corruption, the dark web, and the collapse of society. Radicalized will be defended by Akil Augustine, a content creator and producer who has worked with the National Hockey League, National Basketball Association, Toronto Raptors, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He also works with educators to create storytelling workshops for students.

We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib

We Have Always Been Here is a memoir by Samra Habib. It chronicles the trials and tribulations she has dealt with throughout her life, including facing persecution in Pakistan, arriving in Canada as a refugee, and coming to terms with her faith, body, and sexuality. The book will be defended by Amanda Brugel, an actor known for her roles in The Handmaid’s Tale, Orphan Black, and Snowpiercer. She is also set to appear in numerous upcoming feature films.

Son of a Trickster by Eden Robinson

Son of a Trickster follows Jared, a 16-year-old who smokes and drinks too much, but who holds his family together and takes care of his elderly neighbours. It is the first book in a trilogy by award-winning author Eden Robinson from Kitamaat, British Columbia. Son of a Trickster will be defended by Kaniehtiio Horn, an actor who hails from the Kahnawake Mohawk reserve near Montreal. She is best known for her starring role in the series Bearskins.

From the Ashes by Jesse Thistle

From the Ashes is a debut memoir by Jesse Thistle, a York University Professor and recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal. The book narrates his difficult childhood, journey through homelessness and addiction, and successful effort to turn his life around. It will be defended by George Canyon, one of Canada’s biggest names in country music. He is an inductee in the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame and has won numerous awards and accolades.

Tune in to Canada Reads 2020 and listen to the case for why each of these works of literature deserves to be recognized as the one to bring Canada into focus. No matter which one wins, it is clear that they all deserve a read.
