Sault Ste. Marie Gets Inaugural Poutine Feast

Poutine lovers of Sault Ste. Marie are thrilled and ready to welcome the city’s first poutine festival. It sure to be a uniquely Canadian food festival that you don’t want to miss.

The festival, known as Poutine Feast, is set to be held at Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site from Friday, June 28th to Monday, July 1st. The grounds will be open from 11 am to 9 pm every day, giving you plenty of time to come and check it out. Admission to Poutine Feast is completely free and the event is sponsored by St-Albert Cheese Factory.

What better way to ring in Canada Day than with a multi-day poutine celebration? Poutine is often considered to be Canada’s national food, and we sure do love the combination of fries, cheese curds, and gravy that forms the basis of the dish. Some even call it the “Canadian salad.” Originally invented in Quebec, poutine is now served at fast food joints, movie theatres, and restaurants all across the country.

Poutine Feast is a travelling festival put on by dedicated food truck owners from across the province. The event only began last year but was so successful that nine more cities have been added to the tour, Sault Ste. Marie among them. On top of the mouth-watering eats, come out to enjoy some fun and family friendly games and entertainment. There is even a poutine contest scheduled for Canada Day!

The poutine vendors that will be present and serving up their delicious concoctions are Smokin R&Rs, Herberts Fries, Fat Les’s Chip Stand, The Upper Deck, and BBQ Babes. All have fantastic reviews online and clearly know how to serve up delicious poutine with good gravy and perfectly crisp fries. You’ll also be able to grab a hot dog from Herberts Hot Dogs and treat yourself to sweet desserts from Mrs. Mini Donuts, Miss Ellie’s Lemonade, and Mr. Swirl.

Opt for simple and traditional poutine with just the right amount of cheese curds and gravy or dare to branch out and try some novel combinations. You may be surprised at the number of different ingredients and protein options that pair well with poutine. Don’t worry if you’ve got any dietary restrictions or preferences, the vendors will have that covered with equally delicious vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

As Poutine Feast is scheduled to coincide with Canada Day’s celebrations and with voyageur celebration at Ermatinger-Clergue, it’s sure to be one of the city’s busiest festivals ever. If you want to beat the crowds and the lines at the vendors, consider coming to the feast sooner in the day. Organizers also encourage visitors to help reduce the amount of waste created at the event by bringing along their own reusable forks and straws.

Whether you love poutine or you’re just looking for a fun event in the Sault Ste. Marie area around Canada Day, Poutine Feast has something to offer for everyone. Come with your friends and family and enjoy a distinctly Canadian food festival at a national historic site. It doesn’t get much more Canadian than that.
