Under the Hood with Marty Vernon, Shop Foreman

If we described Marty Vernon’s role at Brasso with only one word it would be: House. He laughs at the reference to the character, a diagnostic genius from the medical drama TV series by the same name, but nods in sheepish agreement.

“I like to dig deep,” he said when describing how he deals with difficult diagnoses on vehicles, “you have to be a detective.”

Marty started as a technician at Brasso in 1985 and worked his way up to Shop Foreman. His favourite aspect of his job is getting to the bottom of problem, even when the only clues he has to work with are brief descriptions presented as sound effects.

“It’s important to understand most people aren’t technical, so I take the time to communicate and really listen.” One of Marty’s most effective tools he uses on a daily basis is taking test drives with customers.

“If cars acted up all the time, or during every test drive, my job would be easy,” he said. “I’ve been listening to squeaks and rattles for 32 years so I can usually figure it out. Nissan has great products so it’s rare to come across issues that cannot be resolved.”

If there is a particularly stubborn issue Marty emphasizes that he and his team of licensed techs go the extra mile to find the solution. “We don’t just wash our hands and say it’s not doing it, we get to the bottom of every concern.”

When asked why servicing vehicles at Brasso is different than other Nissan dealerships, Marty attributed it to two key elements.
“The family atmosphere that has always been here since day one. That means we have low turn-over. The staff that are working on vehicles have an incredible depth of knowledge.

“After 48 years in business, we know what vehicles need, we’re not just pulling information from a book. We know what owners in Calgary need from a service department, we’ve seen the trends and we are not just a flash in the pan.”

When asked what the one thing he wished every customer knew about Brasso, he responded with a heartfelt “you’re not a number here. We’re all people that work together, like a family does, to have a good life and provide an important service. He added, “vehicles are not small investments and customers become part of the Brasso family.”

Oh and in case you’re wondering…Marty is much easier to get along with than the character in the TV series!
