The Most Underrated Shows Currently on TV
Bingeing on the Best

There’s no doubt about the fact that we’re living in a golden age of television, and while many amazing shows are being rightly recognized, some are slipping below the radar.

Spanning the gamut of genre and storytelling styles, the following six shows each have something unique to offer the viewer. Each one will have you hooked to the end of every episode and give you plenty to think about after the closing credits. If you’re a fan of quality television, then you owe it to yourself to check them out.

Mr. Robot

Mr. Robot seemingly begins as the story of cyber-security engineer named Elliot (Rami Malek) who moonlights as a vigilante hacker, but it quickly evolves into something far grander. When approached by an insurrectionary anarchist named Mr. Robot (played by the talented Christian Slater) Elliot becomes a key player in the hack of the century. Awaiting its third season, this drama-thriller series will have you asking a lot of questions, but will provide you with plenty of satisfactory answers and tantalizing hints as well.

Legion

The very first season of Legion, which has only recently finished airing, was as much a work of art as a gripping television show. Based in the X-men universe, Legion follows a very powerful but troubled mutant named David Haller (Dan Stevens), who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. With its unreliable narrator Legion does ask the viewer to do some work, but it pays back in dividends. Legion is an absolute must-watch, if for no other reason than for the deliciously evil performance of Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza.

Vikings

Vikings is a stellar History Channel historical drama about – you guessed it – Vikings! Based on the sagas of Ragnar Lothbrok, Vikings follows Ragnar’s life from his early beginnings as a farmer to his rise to power as a leader of Viking armies that pillage England and France in search of riches and fame. The show, which is currently awaiting its 5th season, will draw you in not only with its action and adventure, but also with the deeply developed relationships among its characters.

Orphan Black

Approaching its 5th and final season, Orphan Black is a show about a group of women who discover that they are clones, and who are all played by the inconceivably talented Tatiana Maslany. Orphan Black asks tough questions about the ethics of human cloning, and doesn’t offer any easy answers. Though intense at times, Orphan Black also manages to offer moments of lightness and humour, making it highly enjoyable to watch.

The Expanse

Though often referred to as “Game of Thrones in space,” The Expanse (which has just completed its second season) is far more original than such a moniker would lead you to believe. Set in a future where humans have colonized the solar system, The Expanse follows a group of renegades who are trying to uncover the truth behind a conspiracy involving Earth, Mars, and a deadly alien molecule. The Expanse is a dark and gritty show that nevertheless shines with moments of humanity.

These six shows represent some of the best television that’s currently out there. Though Orphan Black is ending, the others all deserve and can benefit from increased viewership. If you’ve got the time to binge watch something new, then start with one of the shows above.
