Pesky Pollen
How to Manage Your Fall Allergies

Because allergies are seen as more of a spring and summer problem, many people with fall allergies don’t recognize their symptoms and don’t know what steps to take to find relief.

Just like spring and summer allergies, fall allergies are characterized by symptoms such as a runny nose, sinus congestion, coughing, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes. They are often triggered by ragweed pollen but can also be triggered by mould and dust mites. If fall allergies usually get you down, then here are some suggestions which may help you manage them.

– Try an over-the-counter antihistamine

Over-the-counter antihistamines can help many allergy sufferers find relief from even their worst symptoms and, best of all, today’s over-the-counter antihistamines commonly come in non-drowsy formulas. Make sure you follow all of the instructions and consider talking to your doctor about the medication you’ve decided to take as well, especially if it doesn’t do much to improve your symptoms. Your doctor may be able to suggest another medication that could work better for you.

– Use a decongestant or nasal spray

One of the most effective ways to clear up stuffy sinuses due to fall allergies is with a decongestant or a nasal spray. Again, however, you need to carefully read and follow all of the instructions in the packaging. Decongestant medications often shouldn’t be used for more than a few days at a time, or else you risk making your congestion worse.

– Check pollen levels before heading out

Most forecasts will include information on the current pollen levels. While you obviously can’t plan your life around pollen, you can at least opt to stay in for the day if your errands are not that pressing. When pollen levels are high, you should also endeavour to keep your windows closed.

– Replace your furnace filter

Replacing your furnace filter before fall begins is a good idea, as your vents have likely collected ample amounts of mould, dust, and other debris over the course of the summer. A new filter will help catch these allergens when temperatures dip and you turn on your furnace for the first time.

– Replace your vehicle’s cabin air filter

You can stop fall allergens from infiltrating the air inside of your vehicle by also replacing your vehicle’s cabin air filter before every fall. Keep your windows rolled up as well if pollen levels are high while you’re driving around.

– Take precautions when raking leaves and mowing the lawn

Fallen, decomposing leaves provide the perfect breeding ground for mould, while lawn mowers can kick up all sorts of other allergens. People with severe fall allergies should offer to switch chores with someone else. If you absolutely must do fall yard work such as raking leaves and mowing the lawn, then it is a good idea to wear a mask.

Fall allergies don’t have to get in the way of your enjoyment of the season. Take some simple precautions against pollen, mould, and dust, and you’ll enjoy significant symptom relief all fall long.
