How to Decorate with Throw Pillows

Throw pillows provide an easy way to add a touch of comfort and style to any sofa, bed, or accent chair. Plus, they’re just a whole lot of fun to decorate with.

The only tricky aspect of decorating with throw pillows is that there is such a vast selection of throw pillows to choose from, which can get a little overwhelming. Thankfully, by familiarizing yourself with a few simple tips for using throw pillows of different colours, patterns, and fabrics, you can quickly transform and breathe new life into any space in your home.

Creating a Colour Scheme

The best rule of thumb when it comes to throw pillow colours is to stick to one cohesive colour palette which complements the colour pallet of the room. For example, if the room has a lot of blue tones, then you’ll generally want to stick to throw pillows in different shades of blue or in complementary shades of greens and purples.

Like most rules, however, this one is sometimes meant to be broken. Throw pillows can also work to provide a nice contrast to surrounding colours and décor pieces. Out of five throw pillows, for example, you may want to have three or four of them match the overall colour scheme while using one or two of them to add a pop of colour.

Playing with Patterns

You can’t go wrong with solid-colour throw pillows as long as you match them well to the room décor. However, you should also consider using patterns for some extra warmth and vibrancy. The right patterned pillow, especially when placed in the middle of a bed or sofa, can function almost as an exclamation point, drawing the eye and alerting visitors to your sense of style.

If you really want to make use of patterns, then you can follow this simple formula: for every three throw pillows, try to have one that’s solid in colour, one that features a busy pattern, and one that features a simple pattern. Simple patterns can include designs such as stripes, chevrons, and polka dots, while busy patterns can include intricate floral, diamond, or abstract designs.

Textures and Trims

Just as throw pillows come in different colours and patterns, they also come in a variety of fabric textures and with choices of trims. You can use different textures or trims to complement the overall style of a room.

For example, crisp and tightly woven fabrics such as linen and cotton are best used in a modern and contemporary design scheme. For a more classic look, choose fabrics that are soft and smooth to the touch, such as silk or velvet. Trims and tassels, meanwhile, look more traditional. Large trims and tassel fringes tend to work best on large throw pillows.

If you want to start flexing your home design muscles, then there’s no better place to start than with throw pillows. Keep the tips above in mind, but don’t be afraid to try different arrangements and to choose pillows that showcase your personality.
