Don’t Let the Cold Get You Down
4 Ways to Stave Off the Winter Blues

Have you got the winter blues? If so, you feel down but don't know why. You can't put your finger on the reason your energy is low, and you are out-of-sorts. You might guess the season has something to do with your condition. During the winter, there's less daylight than at other times of the year, and you may have seasonal affective disorder. Additionally, the lack of daylight hours means you probably aren't outside much, so your day feels even shorter. Luckily, there are at least four ways to improve your vitality and mood.

Make the most of the daylight

During winter, the warmth and coziness of home are inviting. However, daylight is valuable for your well-being, as it helps you generate feel-good chemicals. If you don't go outside much, there will be a shortage of happy hormones in your system. Exercise and sunshine, or simply bright natural light, aids motivation and zest for life.

Aim to make the most of the daylight by walking outdoors at least once a day. Take your dog for a walk, ramble through the countryside with friends, or stroll through your local park or shopping area. You'll appreciate snuggling up with a good book and a cup of cocoa by the fire when you get home. Most importantly, you'll benefit from exercising and spending time in the fresh air and light.

Enjoy the season

Focus on what you enjoy about the season instead of what you dislike. Depending on where you live, there might be leaves or snow to shuffle through, frost-tipped tree branches, warming stews and seasonal vegetables, log fires, chestnuts, and social get-togethers. Decide to enjoy the best qualities of winter rather than dwell on negative aspects of the season you can't control.

Socialize

Initially, you may not feel like seeing friends or going to events. However, once you make an effort, you'll recognize how valuable maintaining your connection with others is in the winter months. When you are alone, there's more time to mull over concerns and entertain the blues. Attend local events, like fairs and plays, and take turns with your friends cooking seasonal dishes for one another, and your spirits will rise.

Set your body clock

Being outside in the natural light and exercising will help to keep your body clock in check. Nonetheless, you can do more to ensure your internal rhythm is working well. Maintain regular times to rise and go to bed each day, remembering not to lie-in too long on the weekends. Keeping a set schedule regarding sleep will mean you aren't likely to develop sleeping problems, which often come with the winter blues.

You can stave off a low mood during the coldest, darkest months of the year by getting outside more and focusing on the best qualities of the season. Also, if you stay connected with others and maintain your body clock, the winter blues won't strike.
