Christmas at the Zoo
Celebrate the Holidays with Zoominescence

If you’re searching for something fun for the whole family in Edmonton this December, then the fifth annual Zoominescence festival at the Edmonton Valley Zoo is definitely worth checking out.

Eighteen days of entertainment, family-friendly activities, beautiful light displays, and artistic exhibitions await visitors at this year’s Zoominescence: A Festival of Light. The festival is, in essence, a celebration of Edmonton’s winter spirit. Often dubbed “Festival City,” Edmonton doesn’t slow down just because the weather gets a little chilly.

Hosted by the Valley Zoo Development Society, Zoominescence is taking place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until the end of December from 5 pm to 9 pm. Special bonus openings will also take place on the evenings of December 26th, 27th, and 28th. Zoominescence aims to create a greater awareness of the Edmonton Valley Zoo, to provide Edmontonians and visitors with a way to enjoy the city during the winter, and to encourage attendance to the facility year-round.

If you’ve visited the zoo during the daytime, then you’ll be amazed at the transformation that Zoominescence brings. Light exhibits shine brightly against the darkness of the early winter’s night, while DJs and fire dancers provide captivating entertainment. Hop into your skates and try out the skating rink or take part in some fun arts and crafts with your kids. Stroll through the zoo to see all of the dazzling lights and to catch some educational animal talks along the way.

One of the main features of Zoominescence is the artistic competition. Over the summer, the Valley Zoo Development Society accepts submissions from individuals and organizations for a unique light installation that visitors to Zoominescence can enjoy. This year’s theme for the artistic competition is “Canada 150 & Our Energy Future.” When you visit, make sure you check out the eleven installations. Among them, you will find a giant aluminum sunflower made of solar panels and a large, six-sided hexagon tower shining in multi-coloured light.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo, which is located on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton’s picturesque river valley, provides a unique setting for the festival. Much beloved by Edmontonians, the Edmonton Valley Zoo is committed to providing a high quality of life for its resident animals and to educating visitors about conservation.

Visiting the Edmonton Valley Zoo during Zoominescence costs $7.50 for general admission and $5 for admission for children aged three to 12. Children under three get in for free! Because Zoominescence is a fundraising event, passes are not valid for entry. However, on top of the fair admission prices, parking is completely free of charge. There is ample parking available just outside of the main zoo entrance off Buena Vista Road.

Keep your eye on the forecast and make some plans to spend a nice evening this December at Zoominescence. Even if the weather isn’t on your side, you should still consider bundling up against the cold and coming out to support the Edmonton Valley Zoo. After seeing the beautiful lights and artistic installations, you’ll be glad you did!
