A Fix for Playback via USB with iPhone
To NON-CarPlay Nissan automobiles

“Mike has been helping me to navigate the Apple world since I bought my first Mac 30 years ago and has become a favourite customer. He is now driving Nissan # 5, a 2018 Titan Pro 4x and wife Cynthia is driving #6, the all-new Nissan Kicks. ” – Einar Brasso

I stopped by Brasso last week to get an oil change on my 2018 Titan Pro and I mentioned to Kirby that I was having issues with my iPhone getting initial connection to the built in system stereo (music playback recognition using the lightning connector to the usb port). When playing audio to a car stereo, it is best for sound quality to connect either the analog audio jack or the USB cable connection. BlueTooth compresses sound and your phone is not getting charged when using bluetooth.

My issue was that when trying to play songs, the Nissan built in stereo would not always recognize what I was playing. I would have to disconnect, hit source input on the stereo a few times, maybe hit the volume, unplug the usb cable and finally after a few minutes it would play. Frustrating. This happened in my 2015 Altima as well but not as frequent as the 2018 Titan.

Kirby suggested deleting my phone from the system and re adding, this didn’t make much of a difference.

So yes Nissan is slowly but surely changing all it’s vehicles to accommodate Apple Car Play & Android play, which is good.

When I spoke to your tech in the shop, he was saying it’s more of an Apple problem and that it’s not a problem for Android, that is not what I want to hear.

So.. here is what I found. A fix for playback via USB with iPhone to NON CarPlay Nissan automobiles.

1) It helps to have your iPhone get updated to the latest secure iOS version 12.3.1. This can be checked in you system settings of your iPhone. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204204

2) The idea is to turn off CarPlay on the iPhone so as you can use your iPhone for music playback on your NON CarPlay Nissan stereo.

3) Go to settings on your iPhone and click on search near the top of that screen. Do a search for content & privacy restrictions.

4) Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions

5) Click on Allowed Apps

6) Here you will see apps such as Mail, Safari and further down you will see CarPlay, click the slider to off (left) for CarPlay. This will make sure your phone does not use CarPlay. This helps the iPhone connect properly to a NON CarPlay stereo.

Remember to switch this back on if you want your iPhone to interact with a new Nissan automobile that features a CarPlay stereo.

I can only hope that Apple’s new iOS 13 that debuts this fall will feature an auto sense for which stereo deck you are connecting to. If Apple doesn’t, let’s all send in the suggestion to Apple. The more that do, the chances of change could happen.

As of WWDC 2019 – CarPlay Dashboard is changing for the better this fall, look for it 🙂
