Thinking Local
How to Continue Supporting Small Businesses

Many small businesses had to adapt and find creative solutions to stay open during the first wave of the pandemic. Unfortunately, they are now facing new restrictions across Canada as COVID-19 cases increase. Here are six tips that you can try to continue supporting local businesses in your area.

1. Order takeout or delivery from local restaurants

When dining out at restaurants is not an option, or if you don’t feel comfortable doing so, then you can always order takeout or delivery to enjoy the food at home. This is the best way to ensure that your favourite local restaurants will stick around. As well as supporting your favourites, consider trying out a new spot that you always meant to check out but never found the time to visit.

2. Purchase gift cards you know you will use later

If there are some local shops and restaurants that you visit on a regular basis but don’t need to shop at right now, you can still help them stay afloat by purchasing a gift card or gift certificate. You’ll be providing the business with much-needed immediate revenue while ensuring that you get to buy their products or services in the future.

3. Look for local alternatives to big retailers

Though big retailers do offer convenience, you can often find many of the products you get at big-box stores and online sellers from small local businesses. It may take a bit more time on your part to visit multiple locations for everything you need, but you will likely experience better customer service and feel more like a part of your community as well.

4. Check local online shopping options

Many small businesses have an e-commerce shop in addition to their physical store, saving you the trip. Look to see if you can replace some of your typical online shopping with more local options. You may be able to have your products shipped right to your door or, at the very least, schedule an in-store or curbside pickup that still saves you some time.

5. Consider leaving a bigger tip

If you have the means, then tipping a bit more for quality service will be greatly appreciated by businesses and individuals who are struggling to get by. A bigger tip can especially go a long way for shops that are offering discounts or free delivery to encourage more business. Use some of the money you saved and add it to the tip instead.

6. Take the time to write reviews

Something easy you can do without having to spend any extra money is to leave positive reviews when you have had a positive experience. Online reviews are very important to small businesses, as they can impact whether someone else decides to buy their products or use their services. Leave a small write-up explaining your positive rating, and consider attaching pictures as well, if it is relevant.

Whether you have some extra spending cash or just a bit of extra time, you can show your support for small businesses in a variety of ways. A few simple changes can help you start living more locally as well.
