Small-Screen Highlights
The Most Successful New Shows This Past Year

When every TV season draws to a close, some shows just don’t make the cut. Thankfully, a lot of fantastic new shows from this past year have proven to be very successful.

If you’re looking for quality TV that comes highly recommended by critics and audiences alike, then the following five shows are a great place to start. Best of all, each of them has been officially renewed for a second season, so go ahead and get invested.

Killing Eve

Centred on two strong female leads, Killing Eve is an audaciously entertaining twist on the typically male-oriented spy-action genre that has received universal acclaim. Eve, played impeccably by Sandra Oh, is a desk-bound MI5 security officer who dreams of more excitement at her job. Villanelle, portrayed in a hauntingly alluring fashion by Jodie Comer, is a sociopathic assassin. The two enter into a thrilling game of cat and mouse, each developing an obsession with the other.

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery marks the first Star Trek series to hit the small screen since the ending of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005. Created for CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery takes place ten years before the adventures of Spock and Kirk on the USS Enterprise. It also takes place in a separate timeline than that of the recent Star Trek films. The series is currently focused on the USS Discovery and its role in the Federation-Klingon war. It stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Mary Wiseman, and Anthony Rapp.

Black Lightning

Backed by the strong performance of Cress Williams, Black Lightning is a CW show about a retired superhero who gets back into action. Jefferson Pierce, a school principal, once again dons his secret identity as Black Lightning to protect his family. He quickly learns that his family is being targeted by malevolent groups and must return to wearing the cape full-time. While Black Lightning is now one of many superhero TV shows, particularly on the CW, its real-world plots bring a refreshing realism to the genre.

Barry

Barry is, in a nutshell, the story of a lonely and dissatisfied hitman who moves to Los Angeles, becomes enthralled with the theatre scene, and dreams of starting a new life as an actor. Of course, his criminal past doesn’t want to let him walk away that easily. This dark comedy, which both stars and was co-created by Bill Hader, is as poignant as it is funny and absurd. It has been met with positive reviews by both viewers and critics.

Queer Eye

A reboot of the groundbreaking Bravo series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, this 2018 iteration features a brand new Fab Five doling out many more life-changing makeovers. The members of the main cast each bring their expertise in grooming, fashion, design, culture, and food and wine to enhance the lives of (mostly) straight men. A Netflix Original Series, Queer Eye has a surprisingly addictive charm and often tugs at the heartstrings a lot more than you’d expect from its seemingly superficial formula.

Getting into a new TV show only to have it cancelled after its first season is no fun. It’s best to hedge your bets and start on a show with good reviews and high ratings so that it has a good shot at sticking around for a while. These five shows certainly seem like winners so far.
