Safe Summer Dining
How to Have a Social-Distancing Picnic

Though the COVID-19 pandemic has closed down many indoor activities, summer is a great time to change your focus to outdoor activities instead. Going on a picnic presents a very low risk of transmission, especially when you follow basic social distancing precautions. Here are five tips to help you enjoy some safe and fun picnics this season.

1. Keep to one blanket or table per group

Picnics make it a breeze to stay the recommended distance away from others while still being able to hold a conversation. All you have to do is position your picnic blankets far enough or choose tables that are the proper distance apart. Then, simply stick to your own space and be mindful of others when you need to get up to walk around. Remind everyone who is coming to the picnic to please bring their own blanket or chairs.

2. Consider the location

The easiest way to hold a social-distancing picnic is to go to a private green space, like a backyard. If you plan to visit a public park instead, then consider going on less crowded days or at less crowded times, as urban parks can be very busy during the summer. A good idea is to head to a smaller community park that doesn’t see too many crowds.

3. Bring your own food

While being outside helps to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the sharing of food, drinks, cutlery, and serving utensils is one of the largest transmission risk factors. Everyone coming to the picnic should bring what they need for a complete meal without needing to share among one another. Different households should also avoid sharing items like chairs or picnic gear. If there is a BBQ, then take turns at the grill using different utensils.

4. Pack your food properly

Though your main concern may be to avoid spreading the virus, you should take steps to prevent food-borne illnesses as well. Use a cooler to transport your food at a safe temperature and don’t eat any food that has been sitting out for too long. Bringing food that doesn’t require much preparation and handling will also help prevent virus transmission, and it is best to use utensils rather than eating with your hands.

5. Prepare for the weather

Having a safe and fun time outdoors means being ready for the weather. In the summer, make sure you put on sunscreen to keep the sun’s strong UV rays from damaging your skin. Consider setting up your picnic in an area with some shade so that you can get out of the sun. You should

Also check the forecast before heading out to make sure that your picnic won’t be rained out.

If you take some simple precautions and remain mindful of your surroundings, a picnic is the perfect activity for the times. Go ahead and send out the invite, discuss the plan with your friends and family, and enjoy a good meal with good company.
