Preventive Maintenance and You
What You Can (And Should) Be Doing to Keep Your Vehicle in Great Shape

Read Your Owner’s Manual – Please!

Seriously, read your owner’s manual. Literally, everything you’d ever want to know is inside that little book. Your vehicle’s actual maintenance schedule is in there and that’s likely the most important information that you need. Don’t fall prey to old car myths or an opinionated friend about when to change your oil and what kind of oil to use and even what kind of fuel to put in your tank.

It’s an easy read and you can’t be taken advantage of or let your vehicle slip out of proper maintenance if you know the facts about what it actually needs. Imagine the frustration of voiding your warranty after taking bad advice or making an assumption about what is appropriate for your vehicle.

Preventive Maintenance Every Vehicle Needs

Now that you’ve read the manual, there are many ways that you – even an untrained owner with no mechanical background or skills – can save money (and avoid headaches) by doing some simple preventative maintenance. Spending a little money now on these basics will save you from more costly repairs later on:

  • INSPECT YOUR VEHICLE REGULARLY
It’s a simple thing to give your car a thorough once-over periodically so you catch anything that looks out of the ordinary. Make sure all your lights are working. Check the air pressure in your tires every month or so. Doing so will help your tires last longer and gets you better fuel mileage.
  • LEARN TO CHECK YOUR FLUIDS
Even if you don’t ever learn how to change your antifreeze, power steering, coolant, or even your wiper fluid (although seriously, don’t let someone charge you to change wiper fluid), you should learn how to check those fluid levels. The “how” is in your owner’s manual. Most importantly, never ignore a leak of any kind.
  • CHECK YOUR OIL AND CHANGE IT ON TIME
Whether your car has a dipstick to check the oil’s colour and oil level or the dipstick has been replaced with an electronic gauge, you should know how to check it. It’s hard to make a universal recommendation for how frequently you should change your oil, but the answer is—as we mentioned—in your owner’s manual.
  • CHECK YOUR BATTERY AND CLEAN THE CONTACTS IF NECESSARY
Most batteries these days don’t require much in the way of maintenance, but you should know where it is and check it to make sure it’s not leaking and that there’s no mineral or other buildup on the contacts. If there is, clean it off with a brush or wire pad. And consider buying a cheap battery tester or jump starter. You’ll never need to call someone or wait for roadside assistance to give you a jump.
  • REPLACE YOUR WINDSHIELD WIPERS – FRONT AND REAR
This may seem obvious, but drivers often ignore their wipers and complain as though there’s nothing that can be done to make them work properly again! are cheap and easy to replace yourself. While you’re at it, give your windshield a good cleaning inside and out—if it’s hard to see, the problem may be inside, not out.

And there you have it. If you adopt these very simple preventative maintenance tips you will absolutely help prolong your vehicle’s life and likely avoid many of the most common and unnecessary repairs that eat the wallets of those who don’t bother.

Of course, if you can’t or won’t for any reason, feel free to ask for help. Click the SCHEDULE SERVICE button below if you have any concerns about your vehicle or believe that something isn’t working the way it should.
