Apple and Google Announce New Streaming Services

Apple and Google have both been in the headlines lately for announcing two different streaming services that are poised to change the way you play video games and watch TV.

Of the two tech giants, Apple has set its sights on video streaming with the announcement of the Apple TV+. The company’s foray into subscription video streaming will be in direct competition to established streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Google, meanwhile, is taking a different route with their game streaming service Google Stadia, which has been described as Netflix, but for games.

Chances are that you’ll be using one or both of these streaming services in the future, so let’s take a closer look at what we know about them so far.

Apple TV+: Late to the Game but Ready to Shake Things Up

When it launches, Apple TV+ is going to be the exclusive way to watch Apple’s lineup of original titles, dozens of which are currently in the works. The service will be ad-free (as customers will pay a subscription fee) and available on Apple TV, Apple devices, Amazon Fire TV devices, Roku, and select Smart TVs.

There is already plenty of buzz about Apple’s original content, which is set to feature some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Steven Spielberg is working on a reboot of the science fiction anthology series Amazing Stories for the streaming service, while Oprah will be delivering multiple programs, including a book club and two documentaries. Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Carrell are also working together on a drama series and Jason Momoa will be starring in an epic fantasy series.

Apple TV+ is set to go live in more than 100 countries this fall. The company has not yet released information on how much a monthly subscription will cost.

Google Stadia: The Next Revolution in the Gaming Industry?

While Apple is focusing on exclusivity, Google Stadia aims to bring games to everyone, no matter what devices or gaming system they have. Just as video streaming services deliver content to your screen on demand, Google will allow you to play video games anywhere, any time, on any device as long as you have an internet connection. The service will be available through Chromecast, Google Chrome, the Google Play Store, and Google Pixel.

The ability to stream video games means that you won’t have to worry about having top-of-the-line gaming hardware or the newest consoles. The hardware itself will all be in the cloud, and you’ll just be streaming it, with no need to wait for downloads, updates, or patches. Google will be offering its own controller for Google Stadia, but you will be able to use the gaming setup you already have.

Google Stadia is expected to be released in Canada, the US, the UK, and Western Europe sometime later this year, with more information expected to come in the summer. The two games that have been confirmed for the service are Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Doom Eternal.

The ways we watch video and play games have changed significantly over the past decade, and it seems like that trend is only going to continue. Apple’s first foray into streaming and Google’s attempt to reinvent how we game promise a lot to look forward to on the nearby horizon.
