Best New Shows of 2019 (So Far)

In today’s saturated television scene, there is always a new series worth checking out. If you’re looking for a show to watch, then here are some top recommendations from 2019 so far.

As usual, Netflix has brought their A game with some stellar offerings, but they certainly aren’t the only ones. Prime Video, Hulu, and cable networks have also delivered. Let’s take a look at what they all have to offer.

Dead to Me – Netflix

Created by Liz Feldman, Dead to Me is a dark comedy starring Linda Cardellini, Christina Applegate, and James Marsden. It explores the developing friendship between a struggling widow and a free spirit who has some hidden troubles of her own. Netflix has confirmed that Dead to Me will be returning for a second season.

Russian Doll – Netflix

Russian Doll stars Natasha Lyonne (of Orange is the New Black) as Nadia, a woman living in New York City who gets stuck in a time loop reliving the night of her 36th birthday party, when she dies. You’ll have lots of fun unravelling the mystery, with plenty of laughs delivered by Lyonne along the way.

Sex Education – Netflix

A favourite among Netflix viewers, Sex Education centres on high school student Otis Milburn and his sex therapist mother. At the behest of another student who he hopes to impress, Otis sets up a therapy business at school to help his classmates with their sexuality-related questions. The delightfully charming show has been renewed for another season.

Good Omens – Prime Video

Based on the 1990 novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens follows a demon and an angel who have grown accustomed to life on earth and so wish to stop the arrival of the Antichrist. Written by Gaiman, the show features a star-studded cast including Jon Hamm, David Tennant, Michael Sheen, and Frances McDormand.

Hanna – Prime Video

An action drama that will have you on the edge of your seat, Hanna tells the story of a 15-year-old girl with amazing abilities who is being hunted by the CIA and has been living in a forest all her life to avoid being found. It is based on the 2011 film by the same name.

Ramy – Hulu

Ramy is a timely show about a first-generation American Muslim pulled between his faith community and his millennial friends, who have a starkly different view on life. A comedy that offers as many poignant insights as laughs, Ramy has received highly positive reviews and is already renewed for a second season.

What We Do in the Shadows – FX

What We Do in the Shadows is a comedy horror series about four vampires living in Staten Island who have been roommates for hundreds of years and what they get up to at night. It is based off a 2014 film of the same name. FX has renewed What We Do in the Shadows for a second season.

Chernobyl – HBO

Chernobyl is a dramatization of one of the world’s most devastating man-made catastrophes and the subsequent clean-up efforts. A miniseries, it is based largely off stories from the book Voices from Chernobyl by Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich, which itself was based off the memories of locals. Chernobyl has received universal acclaim from critics.

Critics and viewers alike agree that these eight shows are some of the best of the year up to this point. If you want to see some good TV, then they are definitely worth checking out.
