6 Top Spring Travel Destinations in Canada

Canadians love to travel internationally, but there’s a lot to be said for taking a vacation right here at home. This spring, forget your passport and check out your own backyard instead.

There is no shortage of amazing things to see and memorable experiences to be had across Canada. Our vast country is home to varying terrain and climates, distinct local cultures, and unique things to do at every highway turn-off. Here are six fantastic Canadian spring travel destinations from coast to coast.

Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Vancouver Island is always one of the first places in Canada to welcome spring. By late May and June, the weather is positively summer-like, so pack short sleeves and shorts. The island is brimming with natural beauty, including rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, and lush rainforest. It’s an outdoor adventure paradise with numerous hiking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

Though a favourite summer destination among British Columbians and Albertans, the Okanagan Valley should really be experienced in the spring. The scorching summer heat has yet to arrive but the wineries that dot the hillsides are in full swing. Enjoy the sunshine and the warm temperatures with winery tours, hikes or horseback rides in the hills, and boating excursions on the lake.

Banff and Jasper National Parks, Alberta

Banff and Jasper are the two most visited National Parks in Canada, with attendance spiking in the summer and rising every year. Summers have also become very smoky due to British Columbia’s wildfires. Spring is the absolute best time to experience the rugged natural beauty of Canada’s Rocky Mountains, with their jagged peaks, turquoise lakes, massive glaciers, and majestic wildlife.

Muskoka Lakes, Ontario

Muskoka Lakes is a quintessential example of Canadian cottage country. It is a wonderful place to kick back and unwind, but there are always plenty of activities to keep you busy as well. Concerts and festivals abound during the springtime, and you’ll always find a fantastic new restaurant to try out. Other popular spring activities include hiking, visiting art galleries, and perusing farmers markets.

Laurentian Mountains, Quebec

Quebec’s Laurentian Mountains may be one of the world’s top skiing destinations, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth visiting in the spring. On the contrary, the spring is a lovely time among the Laurentians. The small mountain villages come to life and hundreds of sugar shacks open their doors to offer sweet maple treats. This is, after all, where most of North America’s maple syrup comes from!

Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, Newfoundland

Spring marks the arrival of massive migrations of birds and whales to the waters around Newfoundland, with high concentrations to be found in Witless Bay Ecological Reserve near St John’s. During this time, the reserve is home to the largest Atlantic puffin colony in North America, at over 600,000 individual birds. Humpback whales also migrate into the area in large numbers, and there are plenty of tour operators available to help you get a closer look.

Canada is a top travel destination for many people around the world. Take advantage of living in such a beautiful place by getting in a car or hopping on a flight to a domestic destination this spring.
