Tips for Shopping at Holiday Markets

Though COVID-19 is still a concern, many holiday markets throughout Canada are going ahead with precautions in place. A bit of planning before you go will help ensure that you have a safe and successful trip. For an enjoyable experience that gets you into the Christmas spirit, follow these seven tips.

1. Make some shopping lists

A holiday market is a fantastic place to do your Christmas shopping. Depending on the selection, you might even be able to find most of your gifts. Take advantage of the opportunity by making a list of everyone you need to shop for.

Holiday markets are also a good spot to find charming and unique Christmas decor. Before you go, take stock of your decor and see if there is anything you are missing or anything you could replace, like a holiday table centrepiece.

2. Look at the vendors ahead of time

Most craft markets have a website where you can check out the different vendors and their wares. Having a quick look at the vendors will help you prioritize which booths to visit while you are there. Knowing the booths you want to see is especially beneficial for larger markets, which can have well over 100 vendors.

3. Take note of any COVID-19 precautions

While browsing the market’s website, you should also see if there are specific COVID-19 precautions in place. Measures will likely include wearing a mask, sanitizing your hands, and social distancing. Knowing what to expect will make for a much smoother trip.

4. Start with a quick walk through the market

An efficient strategy for craft fair shopping is to take a stroll through the whole market before you start shopping. Doing so will let you take note of where certain vendors are and see what else might catch your eye. Be sure you follow any directional arrows when making your way around.

5. Make sure you have cash on hand

Many market vendors have been adapting card-reading methods over the past several years, and COVID-19 will likely accelerate this trend. However, there may still be vendors who only accept cash. You don’t want to miss out on a good deal or a unique item because you didn’t bring any bills, so make a stop at the bank beforehand.

6. Check the weather and dress appropriately

If you are going to a Christmas market that is taking place outside, then check the weather before you leave and prepare for the conditions. Bundle up against the cold in a hat, gloves, scarf, boots, and a warm coat so that you can stay long enough to find everything you came for.

7. Bring something to carry your purchases in

You never know just how many treasures you’ll find at a holiday market, so make sure you bring along a bag to carry all of your purchases. A tote bag with a spacious body and large handles that you can hold comfortably or wear on your shoulder is best.

This year, get some of your holiday shopping done in a way that supports local businesses and artisans. Check if any craft markets are happening close by and plan a nice outing with your loved ones to kick off the season.
