Tips and Tricks for Fall Fishing

Fall colours provide a beautiful backdrop to any fishing excursion, and the crisp air is a nice change from the hot summer sun. As long as you understand how the fish are behaving, you’ll have no trouble reeling them in.

Popular Fall Fish Species
If you’re headed fishing in the fall, then chances are you’re going after at least one of these popular species. Here are some tips on how to find and hook them.

– Bass
Bass move to shallower, warmer waters in the fall, following the shad that they feed on. Look for them in flats, ledges, creek mouths, coves, and in water around 15 feet in depth. Lure, bait, and fly fishing are all great methods of catching fall bass.

– Salmon
Salmon are abundant during the fall months, as they swim upstream to spawn. Popular methods for catching salmon are fly fishing in rivers and trolling in estuaries and offshore. It’s advisable to use strong and sharp hooks, as salmon have thick jaws.

– Walleye
During the fall, you’ll want to search for walleye along the banks. They like to prey on smaller baitfish, such as perch and bluegill, which seek warmer waters and shelter provided by weeds. The most common fishing method for walleye is trolling.

– Trout
Trout are very active in the fall, and the majority will be found in rivers and streams. The best trout fishing is had either from the shore or in about two metres of water. Fly fishing is the most popular method for catching trout, but some people choose to use bait and lure fishing as well.

– Pike
A stealthy species of fish, pike likes to take shelter in deep-water vegetation when plants closer to the surface begin to die off due to colder temperatures. Bait, lure, and fly fishing are all commonly used to hook trophy fall pike.

Additional Tips and Pointers
To increase your chances of snagging a big one this fall, here are a few more tips you can try:

– Avoid fishing in the early morning hours. Instead, let yourself sleep in and get out on the water in the afternoon or early evening, when the sun is higher in the sky and fish activity is at its peak.

– As fish tend to be heftier in the fall, it’s a good idea to use fresh line rather than the line you’ve been using all spring and summer.

– Use the heightened aggression that many species of fish display in the fall to your advantage by going with crankbaits, topwater baits, and shallow jerkbaits.

Finally, don’t forget that the real reason you’re out there is to have fun and to experience the changing of the seasons. Hooking a big fish is a great prize, but enjoying the outdoors with friends and family is what it’s really about.
