How to Keep Exercising in the Wintertime

Over the spring and summer, it’s easy to get out and get some exercise even when you aren’t specifically focused on working out. In the winter, it can be a lot more challenging to go outside or even to get yourself to the gym if the roads aren’t good. However, that doesn’t mean you need to stay indoors waiting for the season to pass.

Staying active over the winter can help with maintaining a healthy weight, staving off colds and flus, and fighting back the winter blues. There are three main strategies that you can try to stay active even in the cold and snow.

Dress for the Cold and Dark
Winter weather doesn’t have to keep you from going outside as long as you are dressed properly for it. In fact, going out in chillier temperatures or trudging through snow will actually help you burn more calories.

Layers are the key to staying warm and comfortable while exercising outside in the winter. Start with a snug base layer made of a synthetic, moisture-wicking fabric. Avoid cotton as it hangs on to moisture. Next, a middle layer of fleece or wool will provide you with the necessary insulation. Finally, choose a wind- and water-resistant top layer. Make sure you also have a proper winter hat and gloves, as well as the right footwear.

Keep in mind that the sun goes down much earlier in the winter. If you want to head out for a run or walk even in the early evening, you should try to wear bright and reflective clothes so that you are visible to drivers.

Try Out Some New Seasonal Activities
Another way to approach exercise in the winter is to simply embrace the season and take up some winter sports and activities. You’ll easily burn plenty of calories and have lots of fun at the same time.

Some of the most popular winter activities that can also help you work up a sweat are alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating. For those who live near some good trails, winter hiking might be a good option as well. Winter hiking provides many new hiking experiences, such as being able to walk on frozen creeks. Just make sure you wear crampons! If you’re really into adventure, then winter mountain biking also provides a thrilling and unique challenge.

Invest in Home Exercise Equipment
For times when you can’t make it to the gym, whether in the winter because of weather conditions or any other time of year for any reason, it’s nice to be able to get a workout in at home. You can find many small and storable workout machines for a good price online, such as steppers, climbers, rowers, and stationary bicycles. Weights and resistance bands are also a highly affordable option for working out at home. You can even queue up some workout YouTube videos and follow along!

As you can see, winter doesn’t have to be a time of hibernation. In fact, it can offer many new and unique opportunities for exercise. By winter-proofing your workout, you’ll have no trouble staying in shape.
