Car Care Tips
Repairing Your A/C : Pros vs. Cons

We all know what it feels like to slide behind the wheel, expecting to drive away without a care in the world and then to suddenly discover some part or system in our vehicle has stopped working and needs immediate replacement or repair. It can be crushing. Especially when money is tight.

So, what about the air conditioning system? I don’t need to repair that immediately – do I? It’s not like that’s a safety item – is it? The answer is: No. In most cases, it’s not. But it could be.

We all understand that if our A/C fails, then we’re in for some sweaty drive time through the summer months. And we’ve all likely had to drive around – even through the rain – with windows wide open trying to compensate for the incredible heat any vehicle can create and contain during the summer. Every vehicle is basically a greenhouse on wheels after all and they can heat up in even cooler weather if the sun is out.

But what about winter? If our A/C fails in the winter, why would I bother to fix it until the summer rolls around again and the heat forces me to deal with it?

First of all, let’s talk about what happens when an A/C system fails. They can stop working for several reasons and some of them are not all that expensive. One is fairly simple: It could be an electrical problem, perhaps a relay or solenoid is not turning the system on. That’s no big deal and you could be back on the road with proper climate control without breaking the bank in that case.

The next possibility is that the coolant has leaked out. Your dealership service centre can easily find the leak and replace the parts that are leaking. With a refrigerant recharge, you’re back in business and the repair costs would still be moderate, depending on the reason for the leak.

Unfortunately, often when air conditioning systems malfunction, it involves the big ticket items: a compressor, evaporator or condenser, and the costs can be significant since parts and the serious labour involved can add up. Depending on the age and value of your vehicle, you may choose to simply roll down the windows and live with it.

Having said that, it’s important to note that most vehicles need functional air conditioning in the winter as well. Many vehicles automatically turn on the A/C when you use the defroster. The A/C unit actually dries the heated air it blows on the windshield and side windows to eliminate fogging more quickly. Outside conditions such as snow and ice can severely hamper visibility. Add to that fogging on the inside and it can present very challenging conditions for the driver and when that happens, you are, in fact, dealing with a safety issue.

Ultimately, it’s best to discuss these options with your service advisor so you can make the best decision for your personal situation. If you are having air conditioning troubles, click the SERVICE REQUEST button below to schedule a proper diagnosis at a time that is most convenient for you.
