Animal Care Tips: Important Info for First-Time Pet Owners
Are you ready for a furry new friend?

When you are ready for the responsibility, a pet can make a welcome and joyful addition to the family. Find out how to make sure your lifestyle is suited to a furry new companion.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in first-time pet owners across Canada as many people found themselves spending more time at home. If you’ve recently welcomed a new furry family member into your life, then here are some important tips to keep your pet happy and healthy over the long term.

Keep Up with Regular Veterinarian Visits

Pets require regular veterinarian care to ensure that they are in good health and to catch signs of illness early on. This is especially true because animals can’t tell us what’s wrong and they are often very good at hiding diseases. Look at online reviews or ask your friends with pets for clinic recommendations. It’s always worthwhile to find a veterinarian you trust. A good veterinarian will be an invaluable source of information if you have any questions as well.

Watch Out for Excessive Heat

On hot days, one of your main concerns should be that your pet does not overheat. Dogs are more susceptible to the heat, especially those with snub noses and thick fur, but pet owners need to watch out for their cats and other animals as well. It is crucial never to leave your pet inside a hot vehicle or in a confined space in the direct sun. Place plenty of fresh water around for them to drink and try to keep your pet indoors during the hottest parts of the day.

Check That Your Houseplants Are Safe

Several types of common houseplants can be toxic to animals when consumed, including lilies, aloe, ZZ plant, jade, golden pothos, and many more. Before getting any new plant, make sure to carefully research or ask your veterinarian about whether it is safe for your pet. If you think that your pet has ingested a toxic plant, then contact your veterinarian or bring them to an emergency animal clinic right away.

Budget Your Pet Expenses

Owning a pet represents a significant investment, so you want to be financially prepared to provide for all of their needs. If you have so far been dealing with expenses as they come up, then it is a good time to sit down and draw up a budget. Be sure to include expenses like food, veterinary bills, pet insurance premiums, license costs, and toys. For cats, litter is also a regular expense.

Keep Your Pet Comfortable While You Are Away

If your work schedule is returning to normal, then you have to consider how to provide for your pet while you are not at home. For example, can other family members walk or feed the dog if you work late? Or perhaps you can look into options like dog walkers or dog daycares. Cats are a little easier in this regard and can be left alone for longer, but they also crave companionship and require daily care.

As things rapidly change and evolve in response to the pandemic, it is important to adjust to the needs of your pet as well. By making sure they are happy, healthy, and well cared for, you will be able to find a life balance that includes your new pet.
