7 Back-To-School Wardrobe Essentials

In the flurry of back-to-school shopping, it can be easy to overlook whether your child’s wardrobe is ready for the new school year and the chilly temperatures that are just around the corner.

Once you’ve finished shopping for all of the supplies that your child needs to do their schoolwork, it’s time to turn your attention to making sure that they will be warm and comfortable while at school. Here are seven wardrobe essentials that you’ll want to go shopping for if they aren’t in your child’s closet already.

1. Everyday jeans

Jeans are a comfortable and versatile item of clothing that is great for wearing to school and to just about any after-school activity. They can be worn with a number of tops and will help keep your child warmer in the fall. It’s a good idea to make sure that your child has about two to four pairs of jeans, depending on how many other types of pants they have.

2. Long-sleeve shirts

Since summer just ended, your child probably isn’t lacking much in the way of short-sleeve shirts and tank tops. Now is a good time to make sure that they’ve also got several long-sleeve shirts to wear to school as the temperatures start to dip.

3. Hoodies

Just like jeans, hoodies are a comfortable and versatile item of clothing that every child should have at least two or three of. They can be worn over any short- or long-sleeve t-shirt and easily taken off if your child gets too warm. Layering is a great way to stay comfortable in the fall and winter.

4. Comfy sneakers

Chances are that your child has significantly worn down their favourite pair of sneakers over the summer, so it’s a great time to go out and buy a brand new pair for them. Make sure that the sneakers are properly sized and will be comfortable for your child to wear throughout the whole day.

5. Boots

While sneakers are good for many temperatures and weather conditions, they won’t stand up well to rain, snow, or freezing temperatures. To keep your child’s feet warm and comfortable as winter starts to roll in, make sure you invest in a good pair of boots.

6. Socks

Another way to ensure that your child’s toes stay warm when the weather takes a colder turn is by buying them several pairs of warm, thick socks. Those thin ankle socks they preferred over the summer simply won’t do for the fall and winter, and they likely have several holes worn into them as well!

7. Good winter coat

Finally, a good winter coat is a must. You’ll want to make sure that the coat is waterproof, windproof, and rated to stand up to the types of cold temperatures that you typically see in your area. There can be a big difference in a coat that is made to stand up to temperatures of -10 C and -30 C.

Creating a back-to-school clothes shopping list ahead of time will make the whole shopping experience quicker and easier, especially with kids in tow. Take stock of what your child has in their closet already, and make sure they are all prepped for school by picking up the rest.
