After Endgame

After Endgame
A Look at What’s Next for the Marvel Universe

A smashing and record-breaking box office success, Avengers: Endgame has left Marvel fans and moviegoers wondering what’s to come for the studio’s cinematic universe. The answer is: a lot!

If you’ve enjoyed spending time in the three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the last decade, then you’ll be happy to find out that the superhero movie franchise shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, according to studio president Kevin Feige, the next five years of stories into Phase Four and beyond have been charted out, with many already in the works.

While Avengers: Endgame may have brought many of the story arcs from the previous 21 movies to completion, it actually isn’t even the last film of Marvel’s Phase Three. That honour will be going to the Spider-Man movie, which is set to be released on July 2nd. Spider-Man: Far From Home will explore the aftermath of the events that transpired in Infinity War and Endgame, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal as the film’s main antagonist.

Another upcoming movie that is currently in the beginning stages of filming is a stand-alone Black Widow prequel set to explore the backstory of Natasha Romanoff, Marvel’s multitalented superspy. Starring alongside Scarlett Johansson in the lead role will be David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, and Florence Pugh. Several sequels are being planned over at Marvel Studios as well, including follow-up films to Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel will also be shifting its focus to a brand new cast of characters known as the Eternals, based on the comic book series by the same name. The Eternals are a species created by the Celestials, powerful entities that were first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy. This pivot will give the studio a new corner of the universe to explore, bringing fresh life into the franchise. Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani have both been cast in the film.

The Marvel universe expansion is coming to the small screen as well. Numerous shows centred on popular characters will be streaming exclusively on Disney+. The shows that have been announced so far are The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (featuring Bucky Barns and Sam Wilson), WandaVision (featuring Scarlett Witch and Vision), Loki, and Hawkeye. All of the original actors will be reprising their roles in their respective shows.

Though plenty of beloved characters remain and new characters are set to be introduced, fans will have to say goodbye to Chris Evans as Captain America and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Both actors have expressed farewell to their roles, but their presence in the Marvel universe is sure to be felt for a long time to come.

With the success of Avengers: Endgame and, indeed, the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, you’re sure to keep seeing plenty of superheroes on the big and small screen. In the meantime, before Phase Four arrives, those who haven’t already now have the chance to get caught up with Marvel’s sprawling roster of films!
